HMA Scholarships Program

Flexible Pavements of Ohio (FPO) and its member companies, working through the Ohio Asphalt Scholarship Fund and the National Asphalt Pavement Association Reseach and Education Foundation (NAPAREF), sponsor a series of asphalt pavement scholarships at ten universities in Ohio, which offer courses in asphalt pavement technology. Scholarships are awarded for the academic year beginning in the fall and running through the following spring. For the 2011-12 academic year 24 scholarships of $1200 each and one graduate student scholarship of $2000, were awarded. View a list of this year's winners.

The Dine Comply, Inc. Asphalt Scholarship for Environmental Studies for the 2011-12 academic year in the amount of $1000 was awarded to an eligible applicant pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Science or Health at universities in Ohio having such degree programs.  For the 2011-12 academic year the participating universities were:Bowling Green State, Toledo, Ohio and Ohio State.  The application period for the Dine Comply, Inc. Asphalt Scholarship for Environmental Studies for the 2012/13 academic year closed February 10, 2012. 

The application period for the 2012-13 academic year asphalt scholarships closed on Friday, January 20, 2012.

The scholarships are awarded to qualifying students selected from applicants from the following participating institutions:

  • Bowling Green State University
  • Ohio Northern University
  • The Ohio State University
  • Ohio University
  • Case Western Reserve University
  • University of Cincinnati
  • University of Dayton
  • University of Toledo
  • University of Akron
  • Youngstown State University

The Scholarship Program, which is administered through the National Research and Education Foundation of the National Asphalt Pavement Association, set out the following objectives:

Provide an incentive for students to gain knowledge in HMA by requiring each student receiving a scholarship to take at least one course in hot mix asphalt.

Provide an incentive for colleges/ universities to offer training in hot mix asphalt by creating a student demand for the course.

Establish close ties between the asphalt industry and universities, to raise the awareness of hot mix asphalt in the academic community and foster HMA related research.

Provide a workforce trained in asphalt technology.
