For Immediate Release: April 1, 2003 Despite a tight job market in many industries, vocations involving math and science skills continue to experience a shortage of qualified applicants. The asphalt construction field is no exception. The association and its members hope to positively affect this trend through activities designed to attract young engineers to the field and enhance the quality of their education. FPO members sponsor scholarships for students taking courses in asphalt-related topics at colleges across the state. Engineering students from many Ohio colleges compete in the association's mix-design competition where they apply classroom lessons to real life applications. FPO staff work with engineering faculty across the state to ensure curriculum reflects the industry's needs. Many of the students who participate in these programs and courses are hired as interns and later full-time employees by FPO members. Students and contractors involved in these efforts at a school or municipality near you could be identified to localize the story.
